Your computer (Computer mode)
Let Claude work with the folders you choose on your Windows, Mac or Linux computer. One command, no server.
Computer mode connects your own computer to your AI apps. It is the easiest way to start: no server, no ports to open, no administrator rights. Claude can then organize files, edit documents, search your folders and run commands or programs — only in the folders you choose, and only with the permission you choose.
1. Run one command
In your dashboard open Computers → Connect a computer. It shows the command for your system:
Windows (PowerShell: press the Windows key, type PowerShell, press Enter):
irm https://mcp.opsgates.com/c.ps1 | iex
macOS and Linux (Terminal):
curl -fsSL https://mcp.opsgates.com/c.sh | sh
Already have Node.js 18.17+? On any system:
npx -y https://mcp.opsgates.com/download/opsgate-device.tgz --cloud https://mcp.opsgates.com
No Node.js? The command downloads a private copy of Node.js from nodejs.org, checks it against nodejs.org's published checksums and uses it only for OpsGates. Nothing else on your computer changes, and no administrator rights are needed.
2. Approve it in your browser
Your browser opens a page that shows a code like BKQT-9X2M. Check that it matches the code in your terminal, give the computer a name and click Approve. Within seconds the terminal says it is connected and shows the computer's connector URL.
From then on OpsGates runs in the background and starts with your computer. You can close the terminal.
Only approve a code that you just saw on your own computer. Never approve a code someone sent you.
3. Add it to Claude
- In Claude, open Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector.
- Name it (for example My laptop), paste the connector URL (
https://mcp.opsgates.com/c/…/mcp) and click Add. - Click Connect. Sign in to OpsGates if asked and click Allow.
Then ask, for example: "Look in my Downloads folder and sort the PDFs into Documents/Invoices by month."
ChatGPT, Claude Code, Cursor and any MCP app work the same way: the connector URL plus the OpsGates sign-in.
Choose what the AI may do
Open the computer in Computers. Changes reach the computer within seconds.
| Permission | What the AI can do |
|---|---|
| Read only | List folders, read and search files, see running programs. Nothing can be changed. |
| Files | Also create, edit, move and rename files and folders. No commands. |
| Files + commands | Also run commands and programs (PowerShell on Windows, your shell on macOS/Linux), like a person at the keyboard. |
Folders. The AI only sees the folders you tick: your user folder (default), Desktop, Documents, Downloads, or any other full path. Sub-folders are included.
Always protected, even inside a shared folder: SSH and GPG keys, cloud credentials (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, Kubernetes), saved browser passwords and cookies, and the OpsGates app's own folder.
Your AI app also asks you before using a tool, unless you tell it to always allow it.
The tools
| Tool | Permission | What it does |
|---|---|---|
get_device_info |
read | System, user, the folders you share and the permission level |
list_directory |
read | Files and folders, up to 3 levels deep |
read_file |
read | Text by lines (negative offset reads the end); pictures as images |
read_multiple_files |
read | Up to 10 files at once |
search_files |
read | By name (with * and ?) or inside text files |
get_file_info |
read | Size, dates, lines |
list_processes |
read | Running programs |
write_file |
files | Create, replace or append to a file |
edit_file |
files | Replace an exact piece of text (keeps Windows line endings) |
create_directory, move_file |
files | Create folders, move or rename |
start_process |
full | Run a command; long ones keep running with a session id |
read_process_output, interact_with_process, stop_process, list_sessions |
full | Follow, type into and stop commands |
kill_process |
full | End a program by its id |
Privacy
Your computer is usually behind a home router and cannot receive connections from the internet, so the app opens a connection to OpsGates and your AI app reaches it through us. Requests and answers pass through OpsGates encrypted, are held in memory only while the call is running and are never stored. We keep only which tool ran, when, for how long and whether it worked — you see the same list on the computer's page. The app keeps a detailed local log in its folder on your computer.
If you want none of your data to pass through us, use Server mode on a machine you control.
How many computers?
On Free and Pro you can connect as many computers as you like: you pay by tool calls, which are shared by the whole account. Unlimited includes up to 3 computers, because it has no call limit. Remove a computer you no longer use to free its place. If you need more, write to support.
Manage the app on your computer
The app installs in your user folder — %LOCALAPPDATA%\OpsGate on Windows, ~/.opsgate on macOS and Linux — and updates itself with versions signed by OpsGates. It includes a small opsgate-device command:
- Windows:
& "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\OpsGate\opsgate-device.cmd" status - macOS / Linux:
~/.opsgate/opsgate-device status
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
status |
Linked account, connection, permission, folders |
stop / start / restart |
Stop or start the background app |
autostart off |
Do not start with the computer (on to undo) |
logs |
The last lines of its log |
unlink |
Remove this computer from your account and stop |
uninstall |
Unlink, stop and delete the app and its folder |
setup --foreground |
Run in this window instead of the background |
setup --readonly |
Never allow more than read only on this computer, whatever the dashboard says |
Remove a computer from the dashboard (Remove this computer): AI apps lose access at once and the app on the computer stops and forgets its secret.
Problems?
- The computer shows Offline: it must be on, online, and the app running. Check with
opsgate-device status, or run the install command again (it keeps the link). - "Not allowed on this computer": raise the permission level on the computer's page.
- "Outside the allowed folders": add the folder on the computer's page.
- Behind a company proxy: the app needs outbound HTTPS to
https://mcp.opsgates.com.
